Laptop Buying Guide: 5 Essential Tips to Know Before You Buy

Imagine this: You want to buy a certain product. You visit the stores, and there are endless choices. But you have to choose one. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack! You might eventually find it. However, the hassle you have to go through is immense.
Well, buying a laptop for personal or professional reasons is the same. There are many brands to pick from: Dell, Acer, Apple, Asus, MSI, Microsoft, HP, Razer, and Lenovo; the list goes on. And, don't get me started with those sleek designs, confusing specs, and promises each brand offers in terms of performance. It’s hard. It’s frustrating. It’s tiresome.
Know Your Needs

1. Processor

A powerful processor means a powerful laptop. If you are going to use your laptop for CPU-oriented tasks such as image and video processing, then i7/i9 or RYZEN7/RYZEN9 would be a perfect choice. Otherwise, you can opt for I5/I7 or RYZEN5/RYZEN7.

5. Display

If you are a graphics designer, video editor, or someone who has to work with images more often, then the display of a laptop matters to you most. From the size of a laptop to the resolution, you have to consider everything.

Talk to your seller.

Extra Tips to Consider Before Buying Your Dream Laptop

I felt the same when I had to buy the laptop I am currently using. For days, I would find myself scrolling through online shops. I would read the specs and then the reviews. I even asked some of my friends to help me. I wasn’t satisfied. But then, I followed a few tips. And, buying a laptop was a piece of cake.

In this article, I will provide you with a thorough guide to buying the laptop of your choice.

Before you buy a laptop, do yourself a favor and ask yourself: Why do I need it? Without a proper answer, you might struggle to find the right one that truly meets your needs. Knowing your needs before purchasing is always a smart move.

If you are looking for a laptop for everyday use, you might want to opt for a portable one whose battery life is on the higher side. In such cases, going for a gaming laptop that is heavy to carry is not suitable.

Similarly, if you are a video editor or are interested in graphic design, you might want to purchase a laptop with a strong GPU, plenty of RAM, and a high-resolution display.  If you are into heavy gaming, a high-performance GPU (for example: NVIDIA GTX or RTX) and a powerful CPU are a must.

Likewise, each brand manufactures different laptops for different purposes. As a consumer, you have to know the purpose of your purchase. Otherwise, not long after buying a laptop, you will find yourself scratching your scalp, wondering if you should go for the new one or stick with the one you bought.

Set a budget.

The price range for new laptops varies depending on their components, brand reputation, and the services they offer. For example, a laptop with an Intel Core i3 processor is going to be cheaper than one with an Intel Core i7 or i9 processor. Similarly, integrated graphics, RAM, storage, display, battery life, and designs also alter the price of a laptop.

Laptops come at different prices; from a few thousand rupees to lakhs, the choices are numerous. After you understand your requirements, make sure to fix a budget.

This was the most difficult part for me while going for a purchase. I wanted to buy a budget-friendly laptop for day-to-day use. But, there were so many options to choose from, and not to forget that their prices were different.

So, I considered the specs, which is the next tip for buying a laptop. Looking for a specification helped me manage my budget as well.

Check for specifications.

The specifications, or simply specs, of a laptop are its biodata. They inform buyers about everything there is to know about a laptop. Here are a few things that you must look at while reading the specs:

  1. RAM If you want to buy a laptop for your personal or official work, which includes tasks like document editing and web browsing, then a 8GB RAM laptop would be sufficient. However, if you will be using your laptop for gaming, programming, and video editing, then, it is beneficial to go for a laptop with 16GB or more RAM.

  2. Storage
The days when laptops used HDDs (hard disk drives) as storage options are long gone. Laptops these days use SSDs (Solid State Drives) for storage, which are faster and more reliable than HDDs. Get yourself a laptop with at least 256 GB of SSD. However, if you are going to use your laptop for heavy tasks; aim higher.

  3. Graphics Cards Nowadays, laptops come with both dedicated GPUs and integrated graphics. Depending on your work, you can get the one suitable for you. A dedicated GPU (for example: NVIDIA GTX, RTX, or AMD RX) is compulsory for 3D rendering, gaming, and video editing.

  4. Operating System The market today offers laptops with a range of operating systems. Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS are some of them. Windows is the most versatile and supports a range of software. Chrome OS is more simple and secure. And, macOS is a first choice for many professionals due to its smoothness and stability.

 Read Reviews

Reading reviews before buying a laptop is like using a double-edged sword. It's important, but there are chances that you will get confused. Reviews are important as they will provide you with first-hand experiences of people. Looking at those comments, you can decide if the laptop you chose is perfect for you or not.

However, you shouldn’t be making the same mistakes as I did: relying on limited sources, not considering personal needs, and finding myself in the review maze.

Even while considering reviews, you should look for professional reviewers who will provide their unbiased opinions. It will help you validate the specs. Also, you will get the information that you might have missed.

Yes, you conducted your research. Yes, you read reviews, but how often do you visit the store and talk with your seller before buying a laptop?

Professional sellers are there for a reason. They are experts on the topic. They will guide you through the product. They will consider your needs and budget and recommend a laptop that might just be great for you. And, who knows, you might even save some money, just like I did, if you consider their recommendation.

Talking to your seller not only helps you with buying, They will guide you through warranty and support, which is extremely important as a tech-holder. They will also run you through discounts, if there are any.

Now that I provided you with the ultimate guide to buying a laptop that is compatible with your work, here are some extra tips that you might want to consider before purchasing your dream laptop.

  • When you visit the store, make sure to use the laptop. You should be comfortable while using the laptop.

  • Compare the laptops that are available on the market. Don’t just jump right into the decision.

  • Consider the weight and design of the laptop. At first glance, it might not seem that important, but it sure is for comfort, durability, portability, and aesthetics.

  • Considering that you have to open and close your laptop daily, make sure to check its hinge.

  • Do not, I repeat, do not buy your laptops from unauthorized stores.

 Conclusion

Purchasing a laptop is always a big decision. On the one hand, it will cost you your hard-earned money. On the other hand, it will be beneficial for you in the future in terms of entertainment and work. I hope this comprehensive guide will help you purchase the laptops that meet your demands.
